Richard Riemerschmid chair for Deutsche Werkstätten Germany, c. 1905

Richard Riemerschmid (20 June 1868 – 13 April 1957) was a prominent German architect, painter, designer, and city planner hailing from Munich. Renowned as a significant figure in Jugendstil, the German variant of Art Nouveau, he played a pivotal role in establishing this architectural style. As a founding member of both the Vereinigte Werkstätte für Kunst im Handwerk (United Workshops for Art in Handcrafts) and the Deutscher Werkbund, Riemerschmid made substantial contributions to the integration of art and industry. He served as the director of influential art and design institutions in Munich and Cologne, where he championed the importance of craftsmanship while also embracing the innovative machine production of artistically designed objects, thus bridging traditional artisanal practices with modern manufacturing techniques.
